This temple is the same as Thiruthangal praised by Thirumangai Alvar and Nammalvar. The goddess is Margathavalli. The deity Deepapragaser stands under Srihara Vimana facing west. Near the sanctum is another sanctum for Vedanta Desigan. Since this place was overgrown with grass, it came to be called as Thooppul.
Thiru Velukkai is another place near this temple where Mukunda Nayaga Perumal is the presiding deity with goddess Thiruvelukkai Nayaki. The Deity is in a standing posture facing west. This place was also known as Kamaseeka.
Brahma performed a Yagna and to spoil it. Asuras darkened the entire Universe. Vishnu appeared as a huge light to illuminate the yagasala. Hence the name Deepa prakasa. Thiru Velukkai is about a mile west of Ashtabujam. The God is also known as Azhagiasingar, Narasimhar etc. Peyalvar and Thirumangai Alvar have sung hymns about the deity.
