Legends declare that two Asuras Onana and Kantan, commander in chief of Jalantharan did penance here, and there are two separate Lingams in the temple, which faces east. One is Oneswarar and the other is Kanteswarar.
People acquainted with the story of Nayanmars will know the relationship of Sundarar with Siva. He was a devotee in a curious way. His friendship with Siva was such that he got whatever he wanted from Siva. In Tiruvottiur, he asked Siva to arrange for a marriage with Sangili, a garland maker, even though he was already wedded to Parvati of Tiru-Aroor. Whenever Sundarar ran short of money he made Siva give him gold and this was one such place where he got gold from Siva.
The temple is an old one but has recently undergone renovations and hence has changed its structure. But there are some slabs with reliefs of Pallava period lying here and there.
