Legends state that this deity was worshipped by Vinayagar. As there is another holy place in Himalayas, with this name to distinguish this, the name Kanchi has been added. Kubera and Muruga too worshipped here and got grace. Anekapam means elephant and as an elephant (Vinayaga) worshipped here, the place got this name.
The structure belongs to the Chola period. In the Muha mandapa, Bairava and Sun are stationed. The deity faces east and is circled by Muruga, Dakshinamurthi, Vishnu and Durga. This temple has the unique distinction of having conferred musical talents to Kanchipuram Nainapillai, who practiced under an amla tree, here as instructed by an ascetic. The outer wall of the sanctum contains epigraphs, which reveal some historical details.
