Located in the north-east part Kanchi, this temple has two circuits. The holy tank Indra Tirtha is opposite. A tank in which Bhudan and several devotees bathed and got rid of their sins is now in a neglected state filled with bushes and shrubs. Gopurams soaring to the sky may not welcome us, but the artistic deities in the Deva ghostas entrance welcome us with their beauty.

Stand in the middle of the south circuit, The ghosta facing us houses Dakshinamurthi, under a huge banyan tree with intertwined branches. Under the tree is seated the deity, its flowing locks as delicately chiselled as the spreading branches above. In the north corridor, we face a Brahma, whose attire and adornments reveal the transition to the Chola style from Pallava arts.

Next is Vishnu Durga whose Prayoga Chakra clearly indicates the early Chola style. Hand bestowing abaya, face radiating peace make us forget everything mundane and stand gazing in wonder. Legends of this temple relate that the planet Budha worshipped here to get grace. And there is an idol for him too.
Buddha preached in Pali language so that commoner may understand him. Then only Sanskrit entered. In the psalm sung by Sambandar for this temple, he has very clearly identified himself as “Tamil Gnana Sambandam”. Apart from the Ghosta beauties, in the outer mandapa, Rama with a Bow, Brahma, Arjuna, Nandanar and dancing girls are carved in pillars.
