The temple is considered as Periya Perumal temple , older than Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam and the idol the largest in Tamil nadu for Lord Vishnu (29 ft). It is believed to have been established during the first Incarnation of Lord Vishnu and hence called Adhi Rangam, meaning original Rangam. The Legend has it that a demon King named Somukan stole the Vedas from the Devas. It is the Lord Vishnu who retrieved the Vedic scriptures from him and taught them again to Lord Bramha. It is also believed that a king named Surakeerthi who was childless worshipped Vishnu at this place to get children. Chandra, the moon god, lost all his glow on account of a curse he incurred. He established a tank and worshipped Ranganatha with the holy waters. He is believed to have been relieved off his curse and regained his sheen. The temple tank, Chandra Pushkarani, is believed to be the tank he established.
The presiding deity, Lord Ranganatha Perumal is seen in reclining posture and the idol is made of Mooligai. The five headed snake Adisesha is sported as an umbrella for the presiding deity. The sanctum also houses the image of Sridevi near his head and Bhudevi near his foot. There is a mace made of silver located near the arm and the image of Garuda seen in praying posture is located near the foot of the presiding deity. Lord Bramha is also seen near the Deity and is believed to be getting the teachings of Vedas again from the lord.
It is believed that worshipping the Lord and Thayar at this place will relieve one from the curses and be blessed with children.
